Wandering Star Meteorites

Karoonda Meteorite

.92 gram fragment from the Museum of Victoria (not for sale)

Name: Karoonda
Classification: CK4 (Carbonaceous Chondrite)

Witnessed fall: November 25, 1930
Country: Australia
Mass: 41.73 kg

The Karoonda meteorite was a witnessed fall on November 25, 1930 at 10:53 pm in Australia. It was observed falling from Eyre Peninsula to mid Victoria - witnesses described it as "turning light into day".
Because of its type it shattered on impact (shaking the township as it did so!) making a crater 46 cm deep with surrounding ridge a little over one metre across, scattering fragments over a two metre diameter area.

The largest piece weighed 7 lbs (3,2 kg) but the total of all fragments collected came to 92 lbs (41.73 kg).

Eventually classified as a CK4 carbonaceous chondrite (the type locality of the "K" in CK carbonaceous chondrites) Karoonda is 1 of only 63 approved meteorites classified as CK.

Very little of this was ever made available to the collectors market and when does, its usually small mg sized specks with little to no documentation.
Do a quick google search and you will see.

Provenance documentation from the Museum of Victoria, Australia is included with each sample.

A limited amount of the Karoonda meteorite is available for sale.
Each sample will come with a copy of the Museum ID card.
