NWA 6423  Reduced CV3 chondrite (S2, W1)

Distributed, fairly small amoeboid, granular and some porphyritic chondrules and rare fine grained CAI in a deep brown, very fine grained matrix (probably diamond and graphite bearing, judging from cutting difficulties and the dark color of cutting coolant water).  Some chondrules have reduced rims of almost pure forsterite or enstatite, which would accord with a high carbon content in the matrix.  Olivine (Fa0.5-46.0), orthopyroxene (Fs3.0-19.6Wo0.7-1.4), clinopyroxene (Fs1.9-2.1Wo40.0-36.5).

CV chondites are named for the Vigarano meteorite that fell in Italy in 1910. They resemble ordinary chondrites and have large, well-defined chondrules of magnesium-rich olivine, often surrounded by iron sulfide, in a dark-gray matrix of mainly iron-rich olivine. They also contain Calcium-aluminum inclusions (CAIs) – the most ancient minerals known in the solar system – that typically make up more than 5% of the meteorite.
