Name: Tatahouine Classification: Diogenite (Achondrite) Witnessed Fall: June 27, 1931
Location: about 2 1/2 mi. NE of the village of Foum Tatahouine, Tunisia TKW: 15 kilos
The Tatahouine meteorite fell on June 27, 1931 in Foum Tatahouine, Tunisia.
The large fireball was witnessed exploding over the
Tunisian desert showering small fragments all over the
desert four kilometers Northeast of the village. About 12 kilograms were immediately recovered by locals, mostly as fragments that weighed under 2 grams from a small strewn field less than 1
square kilometer. Since then at least 3 more kilos have been recovered.
A calcium poor diogenite, Tatahouine is known as "The Green Meteorite" due to its dark
olive green color which is highlighted by black veins that run through it.
A neat fact related to the meteorite:
The footage of the planet Tattooine from the Star Wars saga was filmed in
Tunisia. The town where the meteorite fell was actually what inspired George
Lucas to name the home planet of Luke
Skywalker, Tattooine.
Tatahouine Meteorite fragments for sale:
I have Tatahouine back in stock!
It does not seem that there is much available in large amounts anymore. I purchased almost all I could find at Tucson this year and suspect that the majority of the TKW has reached its final destination.
Each sample I have for sale was hand picked by me from what was available and is an outstanding example of this meteorite fall.
I offer bulk rates on the Tatahouine meteorite - The more you buy, the more you save. Each gram will consist of two to eight fragments.
1 gram lot - $15.00 Item# TA-1GL
